Agnus Dei, (Latin), English Lamb of God, is the designation of Jesus Christ in Christian liturgical usage. It is based on the saying of John the Baptist: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). In the Roman Catholic liturgy the Agnus Dei is employed in the following text: “Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us! Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us! Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, grant us peace!” It comes between the Lord’s Prayer and the Communion and sounds the themes of sacrifice and of adoration. Thus, it unites the sacrifice of the liturgy to the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross as the Lamb of God and calls to mind the sacrifice of the lamb in the cultus of the Old Testament.Both Anglican and Lutheran liturgies have retained the Agnus Dei in their eucharistic rites. It also appears as part of many of the litanies.
The name is also applied to figures of Christ as the Lamb of God, especially to waxen disks impressed with this figure and blessed by the pope.

He was an American poet, novelist, and writer for and about motion pictures. One of the most influential American film critics in the 1930s and ’40s, he applied rigorous intellectual and aesthetic standards to his reviews, which appeared anonymously in Time and signed in The Nation.
Agee grew up in Tennessee’s Cumberland Mountain area, attended Harvard University, and wrote for Fortune and Time after he graduated in 1932. Permit Me Voyage, a volume of poems, appeared in 1934. For a proposed article in Fortune, Agee and the photographer Walker Evans lived for about six weeks among sharecroppers in Alabama in 1936. The article never appeared, but the material they gathered became a book, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941), illustrated by Evans and accompanied by lyrical prose in which Agee dealt with both the plight of the people and his subjective reaction to it.
From 1948 until his death, Agee worked mainly as a film scriptwriter, notably for The African Queen (1951) and The Night of the Hunter (1955). His novel A Death in the Family (1957), which is about the effect of a man’s sudden death on his six-year-old son and the rest of his family, and his novella The Morning Watch (1951), on the religious experiences of a 12-year-old boy, are both autobiographical. A Death in the Family was adapted for the stage as All the Way Home (1960; filmed 1963). His other works include Agee on Film (1958), collected reviews; Agee on Film II (1960), consisting of five film scripts; and Letters to Father Flye (1962), which is a collection of his letters to a former teacher and life-long friend.

Age-area hypothesis is, in anthropology, the theory of holding that the age of culture traits (elements of a culture) may be determined by examining their distribution over a large geographic area. The hypothesis states that widely distributed traits are older than those more narrowly distributed. It is based on the assumption that traits tend to diffuse outward in a circle from a single centre. Traits at the periphery are believed to have left the centre earlier than those closer to it and are therefore characteristic of an earlier period of the centre.
There are several problems with this hypothesis. Diffusion may be more rapid in one direction than in another. Modification in traits may make it difficult to determine the point of origin. Population movements may also disturb the distribution of traits.Some elements (e.g., sociopolitical units) may be more subject to ecological adaptive pressure than others. In several cases in which historical data are available, the data contradict reconstructions based on the age-area hypothesis. At best, the hypothesis may be used in a delimited and historically unified area to determine the probability, rather than the certainty, of historic developments.

Abahai was the eighth son of Nurhachi (1559–1626), the great Manchu leader who extended his people’s rule over the tribes of the Inner Asian steppes and organized his tribesmen into a bureaucratic Chinese-style state. Soon after his father’s death, Abahai eliminated his brothers as rivals and consolidated his personal rule. He was successful largely because of his extraordinary ability as a military leader. He led armies into Inner Mongolia and Korea and made those countries vassal states of the Manchus. With the increased monetary and food supplies available from Korea and with the additional manpower and horses from the Mongols, he perfected the military machine known as the Eight Banners. After four expeditions he finally occupied the formerly Chinese-controlled Amur region of northern Manchuria and three times broke through the Great Wall on raids into North China.
As more Chinese were captured and taken into Manchu service, the government was able to duplicate more exactly the organizational structure of its Chinese counterpart. Thus other talented Chinese were induced to join. On the advice of his Chinese advisers, Abahai changed his dynastic name from Chin to Ch’ing (“Pure”) and began the conquest of China. Although he died before his goal was realized, his reign greatly strengthened the foundations of Manchu rule. A year after his death the Manchus conquered Peking, the capital of China’s Ming dynasty, and shortly after subdued the remainder of the country.
